The knee

Stella’s mother needed a knee replacement. The doctor had been telling her for years that her job was too much for her knees, and it finally seemed to be catching up with her.

“Young at heart doesn’t mean anything to the body,” the doctor explained. Stella’s mother scoffed.

As the pain increased, her mobility decreased.

She wasn’t able to enjoy life any more– she couldn’t walk out to the garden, she couldn’t walk her dog, and she couldn’t take the grandkids to the playground.

Stella hated seeing her mother suffer so much.

“Mom, just have the surgery. You’ll be down for a little while, but it’ll be worth it in the end.”

Her mother confessed that the only thing holding her back was money. Regardless of her condition, she still needed to keep the lights on.

Stella started digging through the boxes in her mother’s basement. She hit the jackpot.

There, tucked away in the deep dark depths of the forgotten, was her mother’s short term disability policy.

She flipped through the policy, page by page– information about waiting periods and elimination periods and how to file.

The most important information, of course, was the benefits section.

The amount her mother was eligible to receive would be enough to cover her bills!

Stella could barely contain her relief as she walked her mother through the details.

“Hello, Dr. Jones? I need to schedule my surgery.”
